Bertram

Briefly Speaking - A small town with a very welcoming feel and interesting things to do and see, depending on the time of year. Bertram is best known for it's annual Oatmeal Festival, a two-day, fun filled event which takes place the Friday and Saturday before Labor Day. The Bertram Train Depot was restored by the Austin Steam Train Association and is a stop on one of the Austin Steam train routes.  The depot is open to the public.

Historically Speaking -  Bertram celebrates it's official birthday every June 25th. That's the day the first train arrived way back in 1882.  Narrow gauge train tracks were originally laid by the Austin & Northwestern Railroad so granite for use in the State Capitol Building could be hauled from neighboring Marble Falls to Austin. In 1901, the A & NW was sold to the Southern Pacific Railroad and the old narrow guage tracks were changed to standard guage.  Bertram prospered as an unincorporated town and trading community up until the Great Depression of 1929, when most small towns, including Bertram,  underwent many changes.  Today, it has a population of around 1300 friendly people, and has several unique businesses that are said to be at the "top of their respective fields".

Shopping - Handcrafted mesquite furniture can be found at the Texas Mesquite Company. You can mine for gems at the Balcones Gem & Mining Rock Shop and shop for antiques at Grandma's Antiques, Collectables & Gifts.

What's Happening - The Oatmeal Festival is held each year the Friday & Saturday before  Labor Day.
