"Live Music Capital of the World"
Briefly ~ The Capital City of the great state of Texas and a Mecca of sites, sounds, education and adventure all await you in this capitol city. Come see the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and learn the story of Texas & some Texas Hill Country history. Also, visit the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge where 1.5 million bats leave their roosts from underneath the bridge each night to feed on insects. You may choose to party and dance the night away on East Sixth Street (Old Pecan Street) which is home to restaurants, clubs and shops with a huge nightlife crowd following.
Not to be missed is the University of Texas Campus and surrounding area, where you will find funky shops on Guadalupe Street, theater performance at the many performing arts buildings and maybe a baseball, basketball or football game (just to mention a few) when the UT Longhorns have a home game.
Historically Speaking ~ The City of Austin was named in honor of Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas". Once a four family settlement the area was called Waterloo up until the Republic of Texas found it as the new Capital City in Sept. of 1839. Higher Education ~ Those with a thirst for knowledge can find satisfaction at the many colleges and universities located in Austin. Here you have the University of Texas- Austin campus (one of the largest in the country), Austin Community College, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Concordia Univ. at Austin, Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest, Huston-Tillotson College and St. Edward's University.
A Day at the Park ~ Austin is home to more than 206 parks with endless choices of outdoor recreation offered at each, here are a few of the most popular ones. When in Austin "Do as the Austinites Do" and take a stroll or run around Lady Bird Lake also known as Town Lake on a 10 mile trail around the lake and through Zilker Park. While in Zilker Park why not splash into Barton Springs pool (open year round) or maybe take in some live music at one of the many open air stages. Emma Long Metropolitan Park beside Lake Austin offers rugged mountain bike trails, fishing, swimming and camping. How about Mayfield Park which will take you to the cottage gardens of England with peacocks roaming the grounds.
What's Happening ~ Major annual events include South by Southwest Music, Film and Interactive conferences in March and the Austin City Limits Music Festival in Sept. Lake cruises available by riverboat, canoe, kayak and even an amphibious vehicle operated by Austin Duck Adventures on Lady Bird Lake, Lake Austin, Lake Travis and Walter E. Long Lake. Art Museums such as the Austin Museum of Art-Downtown and the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum and access to the many festivals, celebrations and recreation of the surrounding Hill Country where your adventure is waiting on you.
